When organizations come together with a singular purpose, great things happen.

Move Forward YYC™ recognizes the impact The Mustard Seed makes in the lives of Albertans in-need. For more than 35 years, it’s been a safe and supportive place where people experiencing problems associated with poverty and homelessness can have their physical needs met in the short term, but also begin to heal and grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually for a better life down the road.

The Mustard Seed provides people with many of the basic necessities they need and would not otherwise have access to. This includes towels, which get handed out nearly 370 times a day. In 2018, The Mustard Seed was facing a critical shortage, with guests having to use facecloths and dishtowels to dry themselves off.

Our goal was to eliminate the shortage, and that called for some creative solutions

During the 2018 Calgary Folk Fest, we set up a towel donation drop off and encouraged friends, colleagues, and fellow music lovers to donate. ATB Financial stepped up by donating 1000 towels, and over the four-day festival, we collected more than 1400 from generous Calgarians.

Keeping the drive alive

The towel drive continued through the rest of summer and fall as we opened up our space as an easy drop spot for towel donations and helped others set up their own towel drives. We called on everyone to do their part, and Calgary delivered, supplying more than 2100 towels to help those who are in-need in just three short months.

On November 29, 2018, our community partners came together once more to move the mountain of towels out of our location and into a fleet of vehicles headed for The Mustard Seed. On arrival, partners and friends passed stacks of towels along a human chain to the front door for more than an hour, ensuring every last towel found its home at The Mustard Seed.

And Calgarians kept on giving

Jordan Hamilton, Corporate Development Officer, says The Mustard Seed still sees the benefits of the campaign to this day. More than a year later, they still have an abundant supply of towels available for their guests.

“It’s been incredible how Move Forward YYC™ rallied together to address a critical need. By setting up at Folk Fest, it just encouraged people who may not have thought to bring a towel to Folk Fest, to give them directly to us. People kept giving, which is incredible.”
